چکیده

applicability. There is not enough discussion about possible empirical approaches to the niche concept (Chapter 4). Although this is probably due to niche hypotheses being very difficult to test empirically, it will be necessary if their framework is to be adopted at all. The authors boldly claim that the niche framework is able to provide explanatory hypotheses about macroecological and macro-evolutionary patterns. However, they don’t provide adequate examples of how this could be done. For example, how might the niche framework be used to ask questions concerning adaptive radiations? What kinds of hypotheses may be generated and how could they be tested? The major problem with this book is that, having built a tantalizing framework with which to address questions in ecology and evolutionary biology, it does not spend enough time demonstrating to the reader that it is applicable in reality. In summary, Ecological Niches is well written, with excellent graphical representations of the models presented, and it makes some very interesting observations. It is also well priced and suitable for postgraduate level or academic reading. Although the book will probably not fundamentally influence ecologists’ modus operandi until there is more empirical support, it will no doubt stimulate new hypotheses and discussion. I highly recommend it!

Improving the Transient Stability of Power Systems Using STATCOM and Controlling it by Honey Bee Mating Optimization Algorithm

In this study, a new method for designing the damping controller was proposed to improve the transient power system stability in a single machine network connected to an infinite bus. The STATCOM controller problem in a wide area of the system function was considered as an optimization problem with multi-purpose objective function. Also, the Honey Bee Mating Optimization Algorithm was used to d...

Determinants of Natural Mating Success in the Cannibalistic Orb-Web Spider Argiope bruennichi

Monogynous mating systems (low male mating rates) occur in various taxa and have evolved several times independently in spiders. Monogyny is associated with remarkable male mating strategies and predicted to evolve under a male-biased sex ratio. While male reproductive strategies are well documented and male mating rates are easy to quantify, especially in sexually cannibalistic species, female...

Sexual conflict and the evolutionary ecology of mating patterns: water striders as a model system.

Two core ideas in the study of mating systems and sexual selection are (1) the existence of a conflict between the sexes over mating decisions, and (2) that variation in ecological conditions drives the evolution of adaptive mating strategies and the diversification of mating systems. A recent burst of experimental studies of mating behavior and sexual selection in water striders has focused on...

Unexpected Strong Polygyny in the Brown-Throated Three-Toed Sloth

Promiscuous mating strategies are much more common than previously appreciated. So much so, that several authors have proposed that promiscuity is the "rule" rather than the exception in vertebrate mating systems. Decreasing species mobility and increasing habitat fragmentation have both been suggested to reduce the "polygyny potential" of the environment and promote other mating strategies lik...

The evolution of alternative reproductive strategies: fitness differential, heritability, and genetic correlation between the sexes.

Paternity analyses using molecular markers have become standard in studies of mating systems, parentage, and kinship. In systems where individuals exhibit alternative mating strategies, molecular analyses have been productively used to estimate the reproductive success of each behavioral type and hence the fitness consequences to each individual. Here we review the fitness results in a system o...
